ACHTERGRONDINFORMATIE ** BACKGROUND

AVANT-GARDE and POP MUSIC
“Today, we focus on  the influence of AVANT-GARDE music  on pop music. Hippie had gone back in time and dug up medieval instruments and folk song. Hippie had also travelled East and imported the sitar sounds. In 1968, however, the AVANT-GARDE influences pop music: Eric Satie, Varèse, Stockhausen, the BBC Workshops experimenting with new sounds. ‘Revolution no 9’ by The Beatles is a good example,  but in this show we stick to songs that are compatible with a regular radio listening experience.  The Avant-Garde influence consists of special sounds, instruments or line-ups not normally associated with pop music at the time, the deconstruction of ‘song’ (i.e. melody, chorus, etc.), repetitions, loops, and so forth”. (Eddy Bonte)

JIM RILEY’s BLUES FOUNDATION
“Jim Riley’s Blues Foundation  opened the evening with a nice set of R&B as it was performed in the sixties: a bunch of covers (Chuck Berry,  Jimmy Reed, Sonny Boy Williamson, et. al.) and some self-written stuff in that mould. Much appreciated.” (Eddy Bonte, from my review of The London Blues Week in http://www.keysandchords.com/live—london-blues-week-100-club-london-18-19-en-20-januari-2018.html

MATTHEW FISHER

“We all know that Matthew Fisher played with Procol Harum and we all know he wrote the organ intro to Whiter Shade Of Pale, but there’s also a lesser-known and quite ROCKG side to Matthew Fisher.  After stints with Bill Fury and Peter Jay and the Jaywalkers, Matthew Fisher joined  Screaming Lord Sutch’s backing band The Savages in 1967. That same year, Gary Brooker asked him to join his new band, Procol Harum. Fisher played on their first three albums, then left and returned on various occasions, while developing a solo career,  AND, surprise, surprise, he recorded an album with R&B rockers The Downliners Sect in 1993! (cd WANTED). Fisher can also be heard n on the album “Hands Off Jack The Rupper” by Screaming Lord Sutch and Heavy Friends.

Matthew Fisher’s solo albums ‘Matthew Fisher’ (1980) and ‘Strange Days’ (1981) have been rereleased by Angel Air, thanks to Angel Air Records www.angelair.co.uk.
