“Tjens Couter maakte ongepolijste rootsmuziek, die steunde op de snijdende slidegitaar van Couter en het soepele, bluesy harmonicawerk van Hintjens, wiens karakteristieke zangstijl duidelijk beïnvloed was door Kevin Coyne. Alleen deed Tjens’ pseudo-cockney-accent een beetje geforceerd aan. Het stel vond uiteindelijk een zielsgenoot in de Aalsterse bluesmuzikant Karel Bogard (zie later ook Kandahar), die ten tijde van zijn langspeeldebuut als producer dienstdeed. “John “Hoppy” Hopkins, who has died aged 77 on 30 Jan. 2015, was one of the best-known counterculture figures of London in the 1960s, not just as a photographer and journalist, but as a political activist. He was the co-founder of at least three underground projects: International Times (IT) magazine; a fabled but short-lived music venue called the UFO Club; and the London Free school, a community-based adult education initiative. Our story begins with CLIFF BENNETT & THE REBEL ROUSERS. Initially a rock’n’roll band formed in ‘59, they soon developed  into a soul – R&B  band with a fantastic brass section.  The band moved to Hamburg in ’62. Two members preferred to stay home and were replaced by former Savages NICKY HOPKINS and BERNIE WATSON. Another EX-SAVAGE helped them out: guitarist DAVE WENDELLS.

He had only been a SAVAGE for half a year,  from May to October 1962, alongside Carlo Little, Ricky Brown, Andy Wren and Ritchie Blackmore. He stayed with CLIFF BENNETT & THE REBEL ROUSERS till June ’65, long enough to feature on several singles and to enjoy chart success with “ONE WAY LOVE”, reaching no.… Read more...
