Reconnecting with its roots in the Workers’ movement, Topic has collaborated with the General Federation of Trade Unions in ‘Voice & Vision’, a new double-CD set of songs of resistance, democracy and peace. This fabulous collection gathers together legendary Topic artists such as Ewan MacColl, Peggy Seeger, Norma Waterson, Pete Seeger, Louis Killen, Anne Briggs and Martin Carthy, alongside newer voices like Fran Morter and Adam Rees, Kiti Theobald, Jack Forbes, and 17 year old Piers Haslam.

The Monsanto Years was recorded in six weeks between January and February at Teatro Studios, a converted movie theatre in Oxnard, California owned by Daniel Lanois. The album’s nine songs share their rough-hewn, country punk qualities with Young’s liveliest studio recordings, while Promise Of The Real resemble a less expansive Crazy Horse. There is, perhaps, an understandable pragmatism on Young’s part in hooking up with these younger players, (…) – the last time Young engaged a group of musicians outside his regular collaborators was with Pearl Jam on 1995’s Mirror Ball: another bunch of eager acolytes sympathetic to Young’s cause.

The Monsanto Years, het lied, ook titel van het album, is de sterkste song van deze CD. Zelfs voor wie geen flauw benul heeft van waar dit over gaat, is dit een beresterk nummer. Ik geef geen citaat uit de tekst. Laat ik enkel zeggen dat dit nummer niet bepaald populair zal worden in de gebouwen van Monsanto. Prachtige typische Crazy Horse gitaren met dat onnabootsbare staccato-ritme. Als afsluiter ten slotte een wondermooie song van opa Neil: “If I don’t Know (what I’m doin)”.

THE BASKETBALL DIARIES (original sound track)
Film adaptation of street tough Jim Carroll’s epistle about his kaleidoscopic free fall into the harrowing world of drug addiction. As a member of a seemingly unbeatable high school basketball squad, Jim’s life centers around the basketball court and the court becomes a metaphor for the world in his mind. A best friend who is dying of leukemia, a coach (“Swifty”) who takes unacceptable liberties with the boys on his team, teenage sexual angst, and an unhealthy appetite for heroin — all of these begin to encroach on young Jim’s dream of becoming a basketball star. Soon, the dark streets of New York become a refuge from his mother’s mounting concern for her son. He can’t go home and his only escape from the reality of the streets is heroin for which he steals, robs and prostitutes himself. Only with the help of Reggie, an older neighborhood friend with whom Jim “picked up a game” now and then, is he able to begin the long journey back to sanity.

JIM CARROLL 1949 – 2009
In 1978, Carroll published The Basketball Diaries, an autobiographical book concerning his life as a teenager in New York City’s hard drug culture. “Diaries” is an edited collection of the diaries he kept between the ages of 12 and 16, detailing his sexual experiences, high school basketball career, and his addiction to heroin, which began when he was 13.  (…)After working as a musician, Carroll returned to writing full-time in the mid-1980s and began to appear regularly on the spoken-word circuit. Starting in 1991, Carroll performed readings from his then-in-progress first novel, The Petting Zoo. (…)  In 1978, after he moved to California to get a fresh start since overcoming his heroin addiction, Carroll formed The Jim Carroll Band, a new wave / punk band with encouragement from  Patti Slith, ith whom he once shared an apartment in New York City, along with  Robert Maplethorpe.  (Wikipedia)

p 16 november 1972 werd “Mistero Buffo” gecreëerd in het kleine zaaltje van de Muntschouwburg. Het was een vrije productie die tot stand was gekomen onder impuls van Muntdirecteur Huysman. Het enorme succes gaf in februari 1973 aanleiding tot de vorming van de Internationale Nieuwe Scène, die prompt met “Mistero buffo” zowat overal in het binnenland en zelfs hier en daar in het buitenland voorstellingen gingen geven.
