Roger Glover & Guests: The Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper’s Feast: entire album

A musician who had represented the heavy rock trend, Deep Purple’s Roger Glover, released a single that could have been a true hippies anthem: ‘Love Is All’. But this was 1974, seven years after the Summer of Love. Everything soft – like a joint and folk music or simple beat – had been replaced by many things hard and dark: hard rock, paranoia and heroin.  The multicoloured hippies  with their aspirations for a different lifestyle, had been replaced by cheap glitter and stardom aspirations.

But ‘Love Is All’ was a huge hit and its lyrics still convey the core of the hippie message: love is the way, love is truth.  The single was just one tune of an album called ‘The Butterfly Ball and The Grasshopper’s Feast’ – no  Haight Ashbury Frisco band could have invented a more apt image, the butterfly being a symbol of peacefulness, beauty and a life without worries, flying from flower to flower as it does – the flower being yet another symbol of  nature, life, innocence, colourfulness and variety.

On top of that, the album was actually the adaptation of a children’s book –  another layer of innocence and truth.

“Purple bassist Roger Glover‘s first “solo” album,  is — almost incidentally — one of the most delightful children’s records ever made. Yes, a children’s record. In 1973, Glover was approached about creating a musical adaptation of artist Alan Aldridge and poet William Plomer’s book of the same name — a commission that surprised him, but which he nevertheless accepted. The book itself is delightful and, while Glover‘s work is unquestionably more heavily flavoured by the near-psychedelia of the illustrations, the spirit of the text is retained as well, to create an album that stands among the few truly successful musical adaptations of an existing story yet committed to vinyl. Although Glover, as the album’s premier composer, takes the bulk of the credit for this success, his co-conspirators, too, merit praise. Convening what resembles one of the greatest all-star line-ups in heavy metal history — and then banning them from even glancing toward their usual territory — Glover is joined by Purple stalwarts David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes, future Rainbow front man Ronnie James Dio, session stars Eddie Hardin and Tony Ashton, soul singer Jimmy Helms, Roxy Music‘s Eddie Jobson and John Gustafson, and three quarters of funk-rock aspirants Fancy. Each was given his own role to play and the resultant album is a tremendous mishmash of musical styles, from folky balladeering to psychedelic whimsy, but leaning most heavily toward an early-’70s pop/rock vibe”  (Source: Dave Thompson, www.allmusic.com)

LA COMMUNE N’EST PAS MORTE!

De Commune als voorbeeld
Op deze plaat brengt Serge Utgé-Royo met eenvoudige chansons hulde aan deze volksopstand van arbeiders, de kleinburgerij, de eenvoudige middenstander, artiesten en intellectuelen. Utgé-Royo, zelf een kind van Catalaanse Republikeinen die op de vlucht moesten voor Franco, vraagt ons het voorbeeld van de Commune indachtig te blijven: de zelforganisatie van het volk; inspraak; de strijd tegen uitbuiting, verknechting en terreur; het grenzeloos geloof van de Communards in een betere wereld die ze zelf zouden bouwen, maar evengoed aan de cultuur van de het gewone volk. Dat doet Utgé-Royo met hedendaagse nummers van hemzelf of bevriende artiesten, maar ook met liederen van toen.
Het openingsnummer “La Commune n’est pas morte!” vat de boodschap van dit werkstuk plaat samen. Het nummer dateert van na de val van de Commune en werd gepend door Eugène Poitier, die tevens De Internationale op zijn palmares heeft staan.  Eens komt de Commune terug en wordt de onderdrukker verslagen.

THE LIVERPOOL SCENE : MADE IN USA
“Made in USA” from their album ” St. Adrian Co.”, 1970, is a brillant song that filled one entire side of the LP.  Written by Liverpool poet Adrian  Henri  and Andy Roberts) “Made in the USA” is a “no holds barred and no prisoners taken” analysis of all the evil the US of A did to the world at the time – and is still doing today. It’s beat, jazz, poetry, melody and distortion. Just listen. Attentively.

Fourth Friday is a poetry and music event held at the Poetry Cafe , London, on the fourth Friday of every month (except August and December).  The event features booked poets, singers, songwriters and musicians, known and not so known, as well as voices from the floor. Fourth Friday is hosted by  Hylda Sims. Hylda is a poet, novelist and songwriter with a track record for organizing live poetry and music events at the Poetry Cafe and elsewhere.  Fourth Friday is in its tenth successful year.

On 28 November 2014, the evening’s theme was World War I and Pacifism.
