HIGHLIGHT ** IN DE KIJKER

WOODSTOCK (ENG)
Woodstock wasn’t the first long music festival with an impressive bill. In fact, it was preceded by the Monterey International Pop Music Festival (16 to 18 June, 1967), which lasted for three days and boasted a truly impressive list of performers.
The difference? The media. Woodstock isn’t far from New York and was thus covered by international media from the onset – also because almost everything got out of hand without causing any real damage… Woodstock became something nice as it was happening. Still, the real breakthrough would come a year later, with two more media-related moves: the soundtrack and the documentary. Not just ‘a’ soundtrack, but a triple LP in a gatefold sleeve. Not just some footage, but a real documentary courtesy of Michael Waldleigh and Martin Scorcese who used new techniques to produce the first-ever real rock music movie. In 1970 and 1971, that film would be shown in the remotest theatres and clubs all over the world.
Unexpectedly and with some delay, the near-disaster promoted as “3 Days of Music and Love” turned into an icon of hippie culture and the love generation.
WOODSTOCK (NDL)
