JOHN “HOPPY”  HOPKINS

“John “Hoppy” Hopkins, who died aged 77 on 30 Jan. 2015, was one of the best-known counterculture figures of London in the 1960s, not just as a photographer and journalist, but as a political activist. He was the co-founder of at least three underground projects: International Times (IT) magazine; a fabled but short-lived music venue called the UFO Club; and the London Free school, a community-based adult education initiative. In the summer of 1965, he co-organised the first of the events that went on to be known as the Poetry Olympics at the Royal Albert Hall, London. (…)
In response to a police raid in March 1967 on the IT offices, Hoppy mounted the 14 Hour Technicolor Dream, a fundraising concert at Alexandra Palace; Peter Whitehead’s film of the event, Tonite Let’s All Make Love in London (1967), shows a dazed John Lennon wandering in the huge crowd, transfixed by Yoko Ono cutting a paper dress off a girl as Pink Floyd greet the North London sunrise”.

MICK ABRAHAMS – BLODWYN PIG

“

The roots of Mick Abrahams’ musical career were typical of aspiring guitarists in the mid-sixties, taking in stints with R&B groups like The Hustlers, The Toggery Five, Screaming Lord Sutch, Neil Christian’s Crusaders (replacing Jimmy Page) and his own McGregor’s Engine.

By late 1967, Mick had become a founder member of Jethro Tull, and throughout 1968 the band built up a reputation based on the already distinctive blues guitar of Abrahams and the flute playing and wild stage persona of Ian Anderson. The band’s unique blend of blues, jazz and rock was reflected in their first album This Was, an immediate UK chart hit. However, having two such strong personalities as a twin focus was always going to be a recipe for musical incompatibility, and Abrahams jumped ship at the end of 1968.

While Tull sailed a new course away from the blues under Captain Anderson, Mick formed his own band, dubbed Blodwyn Pig by a stoned hippy friend just back from the Buddhist trail. Their two albums, 1969’s Ahead Rings Out and 1970’s Getting To This, were a delightful amalgam of the ‘progressive blues’ of This Was and the jazzier influences of saxophonist Jack Lancaster, and both albums spent several weeks in the UK Top Ten charts. ROBERT (BOB) HOKUM DEVIL DRIVES

Guitarist / vocalist Robert Hokum is founder and host musician of the Ealing Blues Festival since its inception in 1987. Ealing’s Robert Hokum is an established figure on the blues circuit. A versatile musician, he performs all styles of blues from the 1920’s to the present day and has even been known to rap. He plays with band The Devil Drives which promises to be the funkiest that he has ever gigged with.

“Departing from typical documentary styles, Tonite eschews neat narrative packaging and voice-over, and opts instead for a sometimes jarring montage of scenes from the London clubs and streets, rare footage of performances by the Stones, the Floyd (in one of their first-ever gigs at the UFO club), and others, and political rallies (with Vanessa Redgrave singing “Guantanamera”)–all intercut with the abovementioned interviews. One of the best of the latter is with a very young and charming David Hockney (below), who compares London to California and New York, and debunks ideas about the “swinging London” nightlife (“you need too much money”)” Source:
