ACHTERGRONDINFORMATIE ** BACKGROUND

COUNTRY JOE & THE FISH: MUSIC FOR THE MIND AND BODY,  LP, 1967

At first, Country Joe and the Fish were indie rockers. Three tracks on this trip-music classic, including the stoner’s hymn “Bass Strings” and the drifting instrumental “Section 43,” were initially cut by the Berkeley band for a 1966 EP on singer-songwriter Joe McDonald’s agitprop label, Rag Baby. He started the Fish as a protest jug band (the name combines nods to Joseph Stalin and Mao Tse-tung) but here temporarily kept his left-wing zest in check. Flanked by the electric organ of David Cohen and Barry Melton’s biting-treble guitar, McDonald spread with a preacher’s zeal and spearing wit the local gospel of chemical travel and carnal freedom in “Flying High,” “Happiness Is a Porpoise Mouth” and “Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine.” In fact, Vanguard insisted the Fish not include one of their most popular tunes, a McDonald zinger that later became a sing-a-long pillar of the anti-war movement: “I-Feel-Like-I’m-Fixin’-to-Die Rag.”

TINY LEGS TIM: MELODIUM RAG, (Sing My TItle, 2017)

STEVEN TROCH: NICE ‘n’ GREASY (Sing My Title, 2017)

THE SERPENT POWER

“The Serpent Power were amongst the many bands that emerged during those heady days of 1967 but, unlike many of their contemporaries who went on to build solid careers, their arrival was only to be a brief spell in the sun as this delightful album was to prove their sole release as a full band. There is no doubt that it stands proudly alongside other better known works of that time.
The group was formed by David Meltzer and his wife Tina, intending for it to be a vehicle for his poems. David had recently had a volume of his poems published by Oyez as The Dark Continent, some of which are reproduced in the notes for this CD reissue, and with this new venture he was very much in the driving seat writing all the music and lyrics and playing guitar and harmonica as well as sharing the vocals with Tina”.

COCO MONTOYA

NEW RELEASE: Hard Truth, Alligator, thanks to Alligator and V2 Records Belgium
Coco Montoya’s career began in the mid-1970s when  Albert Collins     suggested he join his band as… drummer. Collins took Montoya under his wing and taught him his “icy hot” guitar style.
“In 1982, motivated by nostalgia and fond memories, John decided to re-form the original Bluesbreakers. Mick Fleetwood was unavailable at the time so John hired drummer Colin Allen to join with John McVie and Mick Taylor for a couple of tours and a video concert film entitled Blues Alive. Featured greats were Albert King, Buddy Guy, Junior Wells and Etta James. By the time Mick and John had returned to their respective careers, public reaction had convinced Mayall that he should honor his driving blues roots. In Los Angeles, he selected his choices for a new incarnation of the Bluesbreakers. Officially launched in 1984, it included future stars in their own right, guitarists Coco Montoya and Walter Trout”.
“Featuring twin guitarists Walter Trout and Coco Montoya, the line-up recorded two albums: 1985’s Behind The Iron Curtain, a live recording of a show in Hungary, and 1988’s studio effort, Chicago Line.” SOURCES: official websites of Coco Montoya and John Mayall.
