ACHTERGRONDINFORMATIE ** BACKGROUND
WONDERFUL RADIO LONDON, BIG L
Simply the best ‘pirate’ stations of the sixties, Radio London had many DJs the age of their audience, redesigned the format of pop radio (Fab 40), introduced jingles, avoided the mainstream (thereby giving many younger and innovating acts an opportunity) and.. was utterly commercial as well. But hey, Radio London – the BIG L – it was a revolution in itself. Yes style changes can be revolutionary too (EB)
WE PLAY an excerpt of a show by Mike ‘The Marshall’ Lennox as broadcast on 27 Dec. 1966.
Mike Lennox Born in Winnipeg, Canada, in 1940, Mike attended college in Texas where he completed a course in “basic radio and television microphone technique” …) . His old colleague, Duncan, suggested he should join Radio London and, in November 1965, he did. Known as “The Marshall”, he took over the Breakfast Show when Dave Cash moved on. His theme tune was the Herb Albert’s Tijuana Brass version of I’m Getting Sentimental Over You. Mike remained a major member of the Radio London team up until the end (…)
LEES HIER MIJN ARTIKEL OVER RADIO LONDON:
Guitarist Anthony ‘Top’ Topham co-founded The Yardbirds. The Yardbirds started out in May 1963, but aged 15 Topham was too young to be in a working band (his parents thought) and he quit in October that same year. Before turning professional as a painter and decorator, Topham stuck to the blues playing with the likes of Duster Bennett and Christine Perfect and switched to psychedelic music with Winston G. ( > The Fox) before recording his solo album ‘Ascension Heights’ on Blue Horizon (early 1970).
A great blues fan and one-time blues record collector, Topham nevertheless is too versatile to limit himself to one genre. Topham said he wanted ‘Ascension Heights’ to sound like British STAX. It does sound like STAX, but also like jazz, funk and blues… with a lounge feeling in places. Amazingly for the time, Topham delivered an instrumental-only album! Difficult to pin down and quite complex, it flopped. A pity: produced by Blue Horizon boss Mike Vernon, it features many great tunes and was recorded with an array of wonderful players like Duster Bennett, Rick Hayward, Pete Wingfield and Herbie Flowers!
Topham would re-join The Yardbirds in the late 80s, but that’s another story. (EB)
RADIO 68 PLAYS: tracks from ‘Ascension Heights’, the four tracks Topham recorded with singer Lloyd Watson [**] , a live recording with of Topham with Andy Silvester, Dave Bidwell and Pete Wingfield [**], a 1966 demo by his friend Duster Bennett with Top and a track by Chicken Shack feat. Andy Silvester, and Dave Bidwell (who would later join Savoy Brown). PLUS two artists that heavily influenced Topham and the early Yardbirds: Snooky Pryor and Billy Boy Arnold.

PETER OVEREND WATTS 13th May 1947-21st January 2017
Peter Overend Watts who died after a long illness was bass player, record producer, songwriter, businessman and founder member of Mott The Hoople. Peter Purnell of Angel Air Records says: “Born in Yardley, Birmingham, Watts attended Ross Grammar School in 1963 and met his lifelong friend Dale Griffin aka Buffin and they played in local bands together such as The Anchors, Wild Dogs Hellhounds and The Silence when they met a rival band The Buddies who had Mick Ralphs [Mott the Hoople, Bad Company] and Stan Tippins as members and they collectively formed The Doc Thomas Group. Changes to that line-up occurred in 1968 and keyboard player Verden Allen joined and they changed their name to The Shakedown Sound. In 1969 they all moved to London and came to the attention of record producer Guy Stevens who auditioned Ian Hunter and appointed him as their lead singer instead of Tippins and Mott The Hoople was formed. Watts was instrumental in getting David Bowie to write a song for the band and initially was offered the song “Suffragette City” which he turned down before David wrote especially for the band their now anthem “All The Young Dudes”. Following the departure of Hunter from Mott The Hoople in 1974, Watts along with Griffin and Morgan Fisher formed MOTT with Ray Majors and Nigel Benjamin. In 1976 following the departure of Benjamin the remaining members regrouped as British Lions with former Medicine Head singer songwriter John Fiddler until their demise in the late 70’s when punk hit with a vengeance”.
