As a homage to Catalonia, I will play Catalan songs of freedom, love, peace and resistance in every show.

in “MY GENERATION” : Pau Riba: Histories d’Atlantis (< Virus Laïcs) + Quico Pi de la Serra “Si els fills de puta volessin no veuríem mai el sol ” (If all the sons of bitches  could fly, we would never see the sky ) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEUYJ_mjYks **in “BLUESIDE”:  BLUES DE PICOLAT, a blues group from Perpingnan, France, who sing in Catalan. It is little known that the French town of Perpignan and the entire region surrounding it used to be a part of Catalonia. A minority there still speaks Catalan (which is also taught at some schools)  and Picoat de Blues must be the only French blues group singing in Catalan (In Catalan, “Perpignan” is said “Perpinyà”).  http://www.bluesdepicolat.com/

KEITH CHRISTMAS

In 1969, while still a student, Keith Christmas (° 1946) recorded his first album ‘Stimulus’, backed by a group called MIGHTY BABY.

That same year, he also recorded with a friend who was working on his first album: DAVID BOWIE. Keith Christmas  can be heard playing 12-string guitar on several songs. HIs second album, Fable Of The Wings, features Pat Donaldson on bass and Gerry Conway on drums – both from Fotheringay.  Gordon Huntley of Matthews Southern Comfort guests on lap steel guitar. His third album, PIGMY  from 1971, features the likes of Mac and Katie KIssoon on backing vocals and  Rod Argent on keyboard. KEITH CHRISTMAS was part of the folk-blues scene in the UK in the sixties, though much of his work goes beyond these idioms. His work shows affinities with the psychedelic variant of folk as well. His guitar-playing is brilliant and complicated, as are the structures of many of his songs.
KEITH CHHRISTMAS has continued composing, recording and playing live till the present day. Have a look at www.keithchritmas.com

RADIO 68 PLAYS Keith Christmas with David Bowie, Fotheringay  and  Dantalions’s Chariot featuring Pat Donaldson and Gerry Conway,  Zoot Money with Pat Donaldson, Mac and Katie Kissoon, The Zombies with Rod Argent  – AND CHOICE TRACKS from the second and third album by Keith Christmas.

KEITH CHRISTMAS KENT LULLABY

The song “Kent Lullaby” refers to the  four students who were shot dead and many others who got  wounded by police at Kent State University, Ohio,  4 May 1970. See also “Ohio” by CSN&Y.

Kent Lullaby

They showed me moving pictures
On the news
today
People had come to
Washington
From far away
Incense and the smell of
anger
Hung like a shroud
across the lawn

America
They’ve finally come
to find you

The arguments they flew
like arrows
The words thy came from
head and heart
Those that mourned the
fallen warriors
And those the victims of the
National Guard
CS and M15s
And the Panthers
in amongst the flowers

America
They’ve finally come to find
you

What side you’re on, what
class or colour
Everybody says they’re
doing their job
So whether you’re a
student or
A member of the Teamsters
mob
There’s only one god,
there’s only one truth
Thou shalt not kill

America’s youth
They’ve finally come to find
you

America’s youth
They’ve finally come to find
you

GUITAR SLIM aka Eddie Jones

In 1954 scoorde hij een monsterhit met The Things I Used To Do. (EB)

RADIO 68 speelt  GUITAR SLIM ps. EDDIE JONES uit zijn periode bij Specialty Records 1953-1955 + Huey Piano Smith,  met wie hij nog speelde, en Clarence Getemout Brown, door wie hij sterk was beïnvloed

FOXX: THE REVOLT OF EMILY YOUNG

“A concept album co-written by singer/guitarist Pepper Martin and Buzz Cason, the collection was produced by Cason and credited to the studio band Foxx (consisting of bassist Butch Bourque, former Livin’ End drummer Little Joe Martin, singer/rhythm guitarist Martin, and well known studio pro Al Perkins on lead guitar). This is one of those early-1970s albums that’s been largely lost to audiences. Judging by the number of reviews you’ll find, it’s even escaped notice from hardcore collectors with the few on-line reviews tending to be brief and somewhat critical.
That’s unfortunate since the set was actually quite enjoyable and innovative in its own way.. Yeah, it was clearly a product of a certain timeframe and parts of the set haven’t aged all that well (other than wine, few things do), but it’s one of those albums that grows on you the more you listen to it. Like many concept pieces, the plotline to this one was a little vague to my ears, but seemed to follow the birth, childhood, and brief life of namesake Emily Young (along with her impact on family and friends). Songs got you from birth through early adulthood where Emily left home in order to hitchhike across the country”. £
Following Emily’s spiritual search (‘Opus Epyllion (The Age Of Light)’), downfall (‘Flight Termination’), and death (‘Just Another Village Incident’). Kind of a bummer ending … Still, musically the set was quite good. Pepper had one of those chameleon-like voices that was equally at home on country-tinged material (‘Into Something Real’), hard rock (‘Rock Jock Bobby Sloan’), pop (the Beach Boys-styled harmony rich ‘Rebecca’s Prayer’), and even sunshine psych flourishes (‘Sunshine Children’)”.

HOMAGE TO CATALONIA  REPEATED
As a homage to Catalonia, I will play Catalan songs of freedom, peace and resistance in every show.

1 RAIMON: JO VINC d’UN SILENCI
Shortly before the death of dictator Franco, Catalan singer-songwriter Raimon performed a new  song called  “Jo vinc d’un silenci”, meaning ‘I come from a silence”.  The singer says that he comes from a place and an age of silence, where common people live and die anonymously. However, these people are now ready to disrupt that silence. You will find translations here: https://www.antiwarsongs.org/canzone.php?lang=en&id=16033

2 MARIA DEL MAR BONET:
QUE VOLEN AQUESTA GENT?
Another icon of Catalan culture, singer-songwriter Maria del Mar Bonet performs a song called “Que volen questa gent”: what do these people want?  “These people” refers to the regime that oppressed Catalonia to the extent of forbidding Catalan as an official language and to impose censorship on the performance of Catalan songs. She first sang that song  in protest against the death of a student… fifty years ago. You will hear the version she sang recently, in protest against the imprisonment of Jordi Sánchez and Jordi Cuixart, both presidents of associations in favour of independence whose crime it seems to be to organise  peaceful demonstrations.
Translations can be found here: http://lyricstranslate.com/nl/what-do-these-people-want-lyrics.html
