KEITH CHRISTMAS

In 1969, while still a student, Keith Christmas (° 1946) recorded his first album ‘Stimulus’, backed by a group called MIGHTY BABY.

That same year, he also recorded with a friend who was working on his first album: DAVID BOWIE. Keith Christmas  can be heard playing 12-string guitar on several songs. HIs second album, Fable Of The Wings, features Pat Donaldson on bass and Gerry Conway on drums – both from Fotheringay.  Gordon Huntley of Matthews Southern Comfort guests on lap steel guitar. His third album, PIGMY  from 1971, features the likes of Mac and Katie KIssoon on backing vocals and  Rod Argent on keyboard. KEITH CHRISTMAS was part of the folk-blues scene in the UK in the sixties, though much of his work goes beyond these idioms. His work shows affinities with the psychedelic variant of folk as well. His guitar-playing is brilliant and complicated, as are the structures of many of his songs.

GUITAR SLIM aka Eddie Jones

Bij de invloedrijke gitaargroten ontbreekt meestal de naam van GUITAR SLIM, pseudoniem van Eddie Jones. Zijn korte leven, van 1926 tot 1959, was bijzonder intens. Hij was in de eerste plaats een showman die zich in het begin van de jaren vijftig ontpopte tot een eigenzinnig componist, een eigenzinnig gitarist en een gepassioneerd zanger. In 1954 scoorde hij een monsterhit met The Things I Used To Do. Guitar Slim onderging  de invloed van Gatemouth Brown en wordt ook daarom tot de New Orleans-blues gerekend. Dat klopt in die zin dat zijn blues doordrongen is van de soul, zoals dat bij R&B eigenlijk hoort. Aan de andere kant is zijn felle gitaarspel een voorloper van de rockgitaar die pas twintig jaar later zou doorbreken via figuren als Chuck Berry  – die ongetwijfeld veel van hem hebben geleend.  (EB)

FOXX: THE REVOLT OF EMILY YOUNG

“A concept album co-written by singer/guitarist Pepper Martin and Buzz Cason, the collection was produced by Cason and credited to the studio band Foxx (consisting of bassist Butch Bourque, former Livin’ End drummer Little Joe Martin, singer/rhythm guitarist Martin, and well known studio pro Al Perkins on lead guitar). This is one of those early-1970s albums that’s been largely lost to audiences. Judging by the number of reviews you’ll find, it’s even escaped notice from hardcore collectors with the few on-line reviews tending to be brief and somewhat critical.
That’s unfortunate since the set was actually quite enjoyable and innovative in its own way.. Yeah, it was clearly a product of a certain timeframe and parts of the set haven’t aged all that well (other than wine, few things do), but it’s one of those albums that grows on you the more you listen to it. Like many concept pieces, the plotline to this one was a little vague to my ears, but seemed to follow the birth, childhood, and brief life of namesake Emily Young (along with her impact on family and friends). Songs got you from birth through early adulthood where Emily left home in order to hitchhike across the country”. £
Following Emily’s spiritual search (‘Opus Epyllion (The Age Of Light)’), downfall (‘Flight Termination’), and death (‘Just Another Village Incident’). Kind of a bummer ending … Still, musically the set was quite good. Pepper had one of those chameleon-like voices that was equally at home on country-tinged material (‘Into Something Real’), hard rock (‘Rock Jock Bobby Sloan’), pop (the Beach Boys-styled harmony rich ‘Rebecca’s Prayer’), and even sunshine psych flourishes (‘Sunshine Children’)”.

1 RAIMON: JO VINC d’UN SILENCI
Shortly before the death of dictator Franco, Catalan singer-songwriter Raimon performed a new  song called  “Jo vinc d’un silenci”, meaning ‘I come from a silence”.  The singer says that he comes from a place and an age of silence, where common people live and die anonymously. 2 MARIA DEL MAR BONET: QUE VOLEN AQUESTA GENT?
Another icon of Catalan culture, singer-songwriter Maria del Mar Bonet performs a song called “Que volen questa gent”: what do these people want?  “These people” refers to the regime that oppressed Catalonia to the extent of forbidding Catalan as an official language and to impose censorship on the performance of Catalan songs. She first sang that song  in protest against the death of a student… fifty years ago. You will hear the version she sang recently, in protest against the imprisonment of Jordi Sánchez and Jordi Cuixart, both presidents of associations in favour of independence whose crime it seems to be to organise  peaceful demonstrations.
