Franky Bruneel, hoofdredacteur van Back to the Roots magazine, maakte voor deze aflevering van Blueside zijn persoonlijke keuze uit het ruime en gevarieerde aanbod aan artiesten en uitgaven dat in Back to the Roots nr. 102 van maart 2017 ter sprake komt.
Franky Bruneel: “Het is, denk ik, de meest alternatieve BTTR-special tot hiertoe. Het start met progressieve soulblues en R&B van JJ Thames, Joanne Shaw Taylor en Jason Ricci. Dan gaat het met de retro bluesrock van Livin’ Blues naar enkele nummers van Little Steve & The Beat Beat (allebei uit Nederlands) om via enkele nummers uit de absolute aanrader van Sven Zetterberg naar de Texasblues van James Elmore te gaan. En eindigen doen we met het pure prewarspul van Big Bill Broonzy”.

DIE ANDEREN

The roots of  German band “Die Anderen”  (meaning both “the others”  and “those who are different”), later to be known as Apocalypse, lie in a talent show held in Kiel, Germany, in 1966. “That’s where Jürgen Drews (lead guitar, vocals) met the members of winners “Chimes of Freedom” Bernd Scheffler (drums, vocals), Enrico Lombardi (bass, vocals) and Gerd Müller (guitar, vocals). Drews joined the band, their name was changed to “Die Anderen” and they signed with German record label Ariola. Ariola’s in-house producer Giorgio Moroder produced two albums and some singles. The band was notable for having four excellent harmonious vocalists, a keenness to play, originality coupled with a total commitment to making money. But they still had a long way to go and there were problems with differing attitudes about the essence and purpose of their music. Their album “Kannibal Komix”, released in 1968 on Ariola, was a milestone. The US film producer George Moorse, who was living in Munich at the time, got hold of a copy of the LP. Using the album as a soundtrack he produced the ghost film “Das Haus in Weiß” (The House in White). The film was as chaotic as the Beatles’ “Magical Mystery Tour” and as such reflected the times”.

“Kannibal Komix” features several songs by John O’Brien-Docker, an Irishman who lived in Germany and co-formed  the country’s first-ever folk / protest song group The City Preachers with female singer  Inga Rumpf who went on to front famous prog band Frumpy.

 COUNTRY JOE & THE FISH: MUSIC FOR THE MIND AND BODY,  LP, 1967

At first, Country Joe and the Fish were indie rockers. Three tracks on this trip-music classic, including the stoner’s hymn “Bass Strings” and the drifting instrumental “Section 43,” were initially cut by the Berkeley band for a 1966 EP on singer-songwriter Joe McDonald’s agitprop label, Rag Baby. He started the Fish as a protest jug band (the name combines nods to Joseph Stalin and Mao Tse-tung) but here temporarily kept his left-wing zest in check. Flanked by the electric organ of David Cohen and Barry Melton’s biting-treble guitar, McDonald spread with a preacher’s zeal and spearing wit the local gospel of chemical travel and carnal freedom in “Flying High,” “Happiness Is a Porpoise Mouth” and “Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine.” In fact, Vanguard insisted the Fish not include one of their most popular tunes, a McDonald zinger that later became a sing-a-long pillar of the anti-war movement: “I-Feel-Like-I’m-Fixin’-to-Die Rag.”

TINY LEGS TIM: MELODIUM RAG, (Sing My TItle, 2017)
“Tiny Legs Tim (Tim De Graeve) is op zijn vierde album uitgegroeid tot misschien wel onze sterkste uitvoerder van die authentieke blues. Hij mag dan wel blank zijn en in de stad wonen; zijn blues wordt uitgevoerd met een imponerende, diepgravende kennis van die rijke voorgeschiedenis én wordt bovendien vergezeld van een heel eigen toets. Zijn gitaarstijl gaat stilistisch te breed om vastgepind te kunnen worden op één bepaalde stijl of voorvader, terwijl hij, willen of niet, ook steeds zal opvallen met die uit de duizenden te herkennen en wat snerpende stem. In de wereld van de blues, waar de stem een instrument is met een gewichtige opdracht (kijk naar Skip James of Howlin’ Wolf), is dat een meevaller”(…).

STEVEN TROCH: NICE ‘n’ GREASY (Sing My Title, 2017)
“Zanger en harmonicaspeler Steven Troch draait al sinds 1994 mee in het bluescircuit van de lage landen. Zo was hij jarenlang de frontman van de Belgische bluesformatie “Fried Bourbon” en blaast hij zich het laatste jaar in de schijnwerper als begeleider van de Finse schoonheid Ina Forsman en blues troubadour Tiny Legs Tim.Steven Troch’s eerste solo-album ‘Nice ‘n’ Greasy’ bevat twaalf songs van eigen hand. Voor de opnames trok Steven naar de vermaarde Greaseland Studios in Californië waar hij een schare topmuzikanten rond zich verzamelde (Rusty Zinn, Kid Andersen, June Core, Bob Welsh). De productie van het album was in handen van stergitarist Kid Andersen, wiens faam als studio-engineer minstens even groot is. Kid Andersen was vanaf het prille begin betrokken bij het album en was van onschatbare waarde bij alle creatieve stappen van preproductie, opnemen, mixen tot postproductie”.
