SPECIALS: BACKGROUND

BELGIAN VAULTS VOL. 5 (180 gr. LP met cd)

belgian-vaults-3

JIM McCARTY about KEITH RELF

renaissence-livefillmorewest

Radio 68 exclusive interview with Jim Mcarty (Yardbirds, Renaissance , Illusion, etc.) about Keith Relf’s solo recordings: the two singles released in 1966 and rereleased on the remastered 2cd “Roger the Engineer”  and home recording to be found as bonus tracks on “Renaissance. Live at the Fillmore West 1970”.
Angel Air Records recently issued a new album by Renaissance, the band formed by Keith Relf and Jim McCarty when The Yardbirds had broken up. “Live At the Fillmore West 1970” is taken from a live tape sent to Jim McCarty and features exactly four tracks, three of which can also be found on the first Renaissance album. The odd one out is titled ‘No Name Raga’ and hasn’t appeared anywhere till now. To me, the added value of this release lies in the four bonus tracks: one unreleased recording by the band at the Island studios and three recorded at Keith Relf’s house – equally unreleased. Whereas ‘Statues’ is a fully finished track, the home recording are just that: Keith and his sister Jane trying out songs as the tape is running. Still, they give a valuable insight into the sort of sound Relf was into apart from The Yardbirds and even apart from Renaissance / illusion.
Sincere thanks to www.angelair.co.uk and Jim Mc Carty

SAVOY BROWN: GETTING TO THE POINT

savoybrown-gettingto-lpcover

“Getting to the Point” is Savoy Brown’s second album (Decca, 1968). After a number of personnel changes, this is very much the album of central point Kim Simmonds, new singer Chris Youlden and  Bob ‘solicitor by day and boogie pianist by night’ Hall. It also features new songs by Simmonds and Youlden, who had left Shakey Vick’s band to join Simmonds.

“Producer Mike Vernon arranged for sessions for the group’s next album, Getting to the Point, which took place in March 1968. Alongside Kim, Youlden emerged as co-leader of the group, and jointly or separately the pair composed most of the material. While the U.K. version of the album had cover-art depicting Kim wearing round glasses with the image of a black man in each lens, the U.S. cover art depicted more innocuous and politically correct images of a maze breaking up a collage of artwork. Kim explained what the original cover design was trying to depict to Melody Maker: “Our cover tried to show that although we are white we see things the same ways as a Negro but for some reasons it was changed.” With just two cover songs and seven originals, the album was to have been the Savoy Brown Blue’s Band’s transition from being a blues covers outfit to a band that had asserted its own identity. Unfortunately, the songs were not as strong as the pieces on the previous album, with the exception of the moody “Mr. Downchild” and the Willie Dixon-penned “You Need Love’” (Source: http://www.savoybrown.com/history)
