Electric Prunes Too Much To Dream LP

THE ELECTRIC PRUNES
Original  Electric Prunes drummer Preston Ritter  died 30 March. He had been suffering from kidney problems for many years. This is an excerpt from his personal website:

“My name is Preston James Ritter, I was born April 24, 1949. I’m a professional drummer, music teacher, private investigator, author and teacher of New Testament biblical theology. I had a successful kidney transplant on Nov. 1, 1995 at UCLA Med Ctr. It is my second transplant. I was on dialysis for seven years until the second one.
As a drummer, I’ve played with and/or recorded with The Electric Prunes, Linda Ronstadt, Dobie Gray, The Beach Boys, James Brown, Sassy Class and many others both famous and unknown.
As an author, I’ve published several books on drumming, theology (in Korean and English), newspaper columns (Korea Times-regular columnist), several Korean magazines and various newsletters. I’ve taught theology at several seminaries in S. Korea (1978-84). I was a non-denominational Christian missionary in Korea from 1978 to 1984. I also worked as a Police Officer in Los Angeles and as a L.A. County Sheriff’s Deputy. I enjoy life and especially making new friends” (taken from Preston’s personal site: http://home.earthlink.net/~prestonr/

Radio 68 plays their pre-success single, B-sides and 8 tracks from their first album.

JOHN ZWETSLOOT * SPIDER AND THE FLY

Spider and the Fly EP

There are quite some Rolling Stones cover bands around, but to my knowledge there’s only one duo cover band and that’s Spider and the Fly from Roosendaal, Holland. Can a duo really cover The Rolling Stones, who are a five piece that use half a dozen highly-skilled guests musicians to recreate their sound on stage ? Well, Spider and the Fly prove it can be done: Arjan and John are two seasoned musicians with a love for the blues and, of course, The Rolling Stones. Jointly, they succeed in covering the Stones pretty well, mainly sticking to the early R&B days of the band. In fact,  they turn the limitations of a duo into an asset by interpreting the Stones catalogue, as becomes obvious when you listen to their version of ‘Down in the Hole’ – not exactly one of Jagger and Richard’s most memorable songs!  Spider and the Fly have released a full cd and an EP. Radio 68 plays the entire EP.

John  (Zwetsloot) – one half of Spider and the Fly –  has had  musical career of his own and he was so kind to put together a compilation of the many bands he’s worked with  between 1980 and 2000, titled ‘Cleanhead Blues’. Some recordings were actually put out on cd or vinyl, many  other tunes are just demos. Radio 68 hand-picked several songs from ‘Cleanhead Blues’.

DISCOVER  1
CHIP TAYLOR: Little Prayers (thanks to Intercontinental Records)
‘The New York Times says it best about Chip Taylor: “If you only know him as the guy who wrote Wild Thing and Angel of the Morning – you don’t know him. Chip Taylor is making some of the most distinctive acoustic music around these days.” A country/rock trailblazer, Taylor returns with his largest and most unique collection of songs yet – the 3-album set, The Little Prayers Trilogy. These eclectic songs, written over several years, might have found themselves wandering and homeless, but have found a place to belong in Little Prayers’. (Review:  www.airplaydirect.com).
Radio 68 plays tracks from Little Players and older covers by Jimi Hendrix, The Hollies, P.P. Arnold and Janis Joplin.

DISCOVER 2
CRYSTAL JAQUELINE: RAINFLOWER (2015)
(…) If anything here states Crystal Jacqueline’s magic, though; even more than the sensual soul that  is the heartbeat of her own compositions… even more than “Mary Waiting,” whose voice and bee-hum intro alone with steal your eyes…, it’s her take on Status Quo’s “In My Chair.”   Once a slice of luciously lazy rhythm’n’boogie, here it is recast in some dark place midway between “Season of the Witch” and “Lucifer Sam,” supremely foreboding, sexy and sinuous… and underpinned by a guitar riff that sounds like a pagan God clearing his throat” (Review in Goldmine, see Mega Dodo’s site).

En nu schrijf ik teksten, zing ik, speel ik gitaar en knutsel ik mijn nummers in elkaar; it’s all about me and my 8-track.
