ACHTERGRONDINFORMATIE ** BACKGROUND

PETER OVEREND WATTS  13th May 1947-21st January 2017

Peter Overend Watts who died after a long illness was bass player, record producer, songwriter, businessman and founder member of Mott The Hoople. Peter Purnell of Angel Air Records says: “Born in Yardley, Birmingham, Watts attended Ross Grammar School in 1963 and met his lifelong friend Dale Griffin aka Buffin and they played in local bands together such as The Anchors, Wild Dogs Hellhounds and The Silence when they met a rival band The Buddies who had Mick Ralphs [Mott the Hoople, Bad Company] and Stan Tippins as members and they collectively formed The Doc Thomas Group. Changes to that line-up occurred in 1968 and keyboard player Verden Allen joined and they changed their name to The Shakedown Sound. In 1969 they all moved to London and came to the attention of record producer Guy Stevens who auditioned Ian Hunter and appointed him as their lead singer instead of Tippins and Mott The Hoople was formed. Watts was instrumental in getting David Bowie to write a song for the band and initially was offered the song “Suffragette City” which he turned down before David wrote especially for the band their now anthem “All The Young Dudes”. Following the departure of Hunter from Mott The Hoople in 1974, Watts along with Griffin and Morgan Fisher formed MOTT with Ray Majors and Nigel Benjamin. In 1976 following the departure of Benjamin the remaining members regrouped as British Lions with former Medicine Head singer songwriter John Fiddler until their demise in the late 70’s when punk hit with a vengeance”. RICHARD ‘Hershey’ SHIRMAN

The Attack were a mod / /psychedelic  group formed in 1966 around singer Richard Shirman aka Hershey (born 26 April 1949, London). The first line-up featured drummer Alan Whitehead (later in Marmalade), guitarist David O’List (later of The Nice) and John Du Cann (later of Andromeda and Atomic Rooster).  Their first single “Try It”  was on the LP of the same title by American beat and R&B outfit The Standells and was also recorded by Ohio Express. The Attack also released a version of  ‘Hi Hi Silver Lining’ before Jeff Beck, but it was Jeff Beck  who  scored a hit.
Richard Shirman declined the offer to be the singer of  Andromeda, but Attack guitarist John Du Cann did join. DuCann was also in a band called Five Day Week Straw People whose only reason of existence was the offer to make a psychedelic album for budget label Saga.
In the early 80s Later, Richard ‘Hershey’ Shirman  put together a blues band called HERSHEY AND THE 12 BARS. Their first album carries the tongue-in-cheek title “Greatest Hits Vol. 2. “ (2000).  ABACABE Records later put out “Welcome to Hershey”, featuring live tracks from 1989 and studio tracks from 1986. Both albums feature a horn section with saxophonists Frank Mead and Nick Payne, friends of Hershey’s who have become quite famous and  have played with a number of big acts like Bill Wyman  and his Rhythm Kings. You will find more famous names in the line-ups, e.g. keyboardist Dave Lennox.

BACK TO THE ROOTS SPECIAL:  www.backtotheroots.be

Op de playlist:  The Corey Dennison Band, Giles Robson, Melody Angel, Little Mac, Sunnyland Slim, Homesick James, the Rolling Stones, Rhythm Willie Hood,  Boogie Beasts.
