OH! CALCUTTA
“I’ve found it impossible to locate the Original Soundtrack to ‘Oh! Calcutta’, a show/musical that  focused on the nudity of ‘Hair’ and blew it up a hundred times. In fact, all the actors on stage were naked. This may have been new in the world of pop and entertainment, but nudity wasn’t exactly new to the world of theatre. In fact, the troupe called The Living Theatre did exactly that: show nudity on stage. The difference? Well, ‘Oh! Calcutta’ was just about nudity, The Living Theatre was about dumping taboos and presenting an alternative to the puritan Western world. The nude black women in ‘Oh! Calcutta’ did shock the most, which tells us more about the many morons in America than black nudity. I did locate a sort of soundtrack, recorded by a German group called Brave New World – and some bits and pieces I cannot possibly put into context.
Anyway, ‘Oh! Calcutta’ is part of the ‘tear down any wall’ paradigm of the sixties and deserves to be broadcast, especially since both the show and the music are all but forgotten”.  ©  Eddy Bonte

“In 2013 I travelled to Mumbai to perform at a festival. Just before I went I was put in touch with one of the new rising stars and masters of Indian slide guitar, Manish Pingle (pronounced ‘Pinglay’). A few days after the festival, Manish invited me to his home. This was too good an opportunity to miss. I didn’t take a guitar with me, but after only a few minutes we were jamming together on two Mohan veenas (Indian slide guitars) and we almost forgot to eat! I had no idea that we would be able to play together, but for many years, in fact ever since I first heard the incredible playing of Indian slide guitar master, Pandit Brij Bhushan Kabra, on the albums ‘Call Of The Valley’ and ‘Lure Of The Desert’, I had wanted to play Mississippi and Chicago blues with a Hindustani classical slide player. It just took me thirty five years to meet the right person to do it with!

Manish had heard some blues, but not the style of rural blues that I was playing that night on one of his Mohan veenas. We had an immediate natural understanding of each other’s playing and found that we were able to switch from blues to Hindustani music without really    noticing where the joins were. It was natural and easy for us to play together, as if we had known each other’s music for years. I left Manish’s home that night and promised myself that someday we would play together again. To cut a long story short, Manish Pingle arrived in the UK in September 2013 to do a concert with me at the Troubadour Club in London. (…)
Fast forward to April 2015 and a few days after a fantastic UK tour together, we were at Leif Storm Studio recording this album. It took us three days to record the ten tracks and except for a double-tracked vocal on one song, all the material was recorded completely live with no overdubs.
‘Mitra’ is friends, the Hindu god of friendship and alliance ….Mitra will keep us together”.

THE SHAKES

The Shakes was een legendarische Belgische psychedelische blues rock band opgericht door multi-intrumentalist Alain Verdier en actief tussen 1967 en 1969. De jonge virtuoos gitarist in de groep was niemand minder dan Dany Lademacher die later furore zal maken als sidesman van Herman Brood en co-auteur is van diens grootste hits. Lademacher, ook bekend van z’n eigen band Innersleeve en zijn werk met Kleptomania, Vitesse en The Radio’s  toert momenteel met The Romance, een waardig en straf rockend eerbetoon aan Herman Brood”

“Ondanks de klassieke blues akkoorden, melodielijnen en riffs die ‘Long Road Home’ rijk is, zit er genoeg diversiteit in de songs en in Morana´s gitaarspel om het boeiend te houden. Uptempo bluesrock, zoals de titeltrack Long Road HomeYour New Occupation en het instrumentale Lookin’ Good worden afgewisseld met ingetogener songs als onder andere Slow Burn (de naam titel zegt het eigenlijk al, het is een slow blues maar wel met een beetje pit in het gitaarspel) en Motels, Whiskey & Me. Met deze laatste blijkt een vergelijking met Eric Clapton onvermijdelijk. Het is vooral Morana’s zang die het ‘m doet, maar zeker ook zijn gitaarspel, evenals de melodie, de sfeer en de klank van het liedje. Ook Heard That One Before heeft een Clapton feel, maar bevat daarnaast nog een funky soul inslag. Die funk sound komt overigens regelmatig terug, luister maar eens naar Betcha By Now en het eveneens instrumentale Baby Batter. (…) ‘Long Road Home’ is een blues album pur sang, afgetopt met glazuurtje van soul, jazz en funk. Een lekkere en interessante plaat die naar iedere luisterbeurt beter en mooier wordt en die je zeker in je kast moet hebben staan”.
