TOMMY TUCKER

“Real name Robert Higginbotham, Tommy Tucker was a  R&B singer, best remembered for his 1964 hit single ‘Hi-Heel Sneakers’.Tommy was a talented piano player and singer/songwriter. In 1951, Tommy was part of the The Bobby Wood Orchestra. In 1955, he had moved on to become a member of several groups, including The Belvaderes, The Dusters, and also recorded under the name of Tee Tucker (recording for the ATCO imprint). On signing to Checker Records, Tommy’s single, ‘Hi-Heel Sneakers’ b/w ‘I Don’t Want ‘ Cha (Watcha Gonna Do)’, reached number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The single also reached number 23 in the U.K. Singles Chart. Tucker’s follow-up Checker release, ‘Long Tall Shorty’ b/w ‘Mo Shorty’, fared less well.

Tommy recruited many musicians to work on his albums, including Louisiana Red, Willie Dixon and Donny Hathaway. Tommy took a break from music in the late sixties. Tommy became a freelance writer for a local newspaper, writing about the exploitation of African Americans in the white owned media. He returned to recording in 1974, recruiting the services of Bo Diddley on two of his albums, namely ‘Mother Tucker’ and, later, ‘The Rocks Is My Pillow, The Cold Ground Is My Bed’.  Tommy died in 1982 at the age of 48 at College Hospital in Newark, New Jersey.”

JACKIE EDWARDS
“Wilfred Gerald “Jackie” Edwards (1938 – 15 August 1992) was a Jamaican musician and songwriter, whose career took in ska, R&B, soul, rocksteady, reggae, and ballads.
Edwards was born in Jamaica, and came to the attention of Chris Blackwell in 1959; when Blackwell set up Island Records in London in 1962, Edwards travelled with him. Edwards worked as a singer and songwriter for Island as well as performing duties such as delivering records. He wrote both “Keep On Running” and “Somebody Help Me”, that became #1 singles in the United Kingdom for The Spencer Davis Group. He continued to work as a recording artist himself, with regular album releases through to the mid 1980s. Much of his later work was produced by Bunny Lee, and he also worked with The Aggrovators. Edwards’ music is published through Fairwood Music (UK) Ltd.
Edwards also worked as a producer, co-producing the 1977 album Move Up Starsky by The Mexicano. He died in August 1992 of a heart attack”.

 VINCE TAYLOR

Vince Taylor never made it in the UK or the US, but he was huge in Belgium and France. His singing  voice wasn’t anything special, but on stage he was a real phenomenon, a devil all clad in black leather with chains, medals and bracelets, putting on a unique physical stage act that involved rolling on his back. Some of his numerous French gigs were recorded and Big Beat Records put out a cd with seven songs captured at the Paris Olympia  on various occasions in 1961, 1965 and 1966. The cd is augmented with two early singles on Parlophone, five tracks on Palette (incl. the unreleased ‘Cold, White and Beautiful’).
Taylor compensated his voice by putting on a show, but also by hiring some of the best UK musicians around. On his Parlophone singles from (1959-1960), Vince Taylor was accompanied by the likes of  Brian ‘Licorice’ Locking (bass), Brian Bennett (drums), Tony Sheridan (voc, gtr) and Joe Moretti (gtr). Next, Locking and Bennett moved to Marty Wilde’s backing group, the Wild Cats, which developed into The Krew Cats featuring Big Jim Sullivan on lead. At the end of 1961, Brian Bennett became a Shadow. After a short stint with Adam Faith’s Group The Roulettes, Locking equally joined The Shadows (as both Tony Meehan and Jet Harris had left by that time). Jim Sullivan also lead his own group, The Big Jim Sullivan Combo (one single in 1961), before becoming an in-demand session player who would keep on releasing solo stuff every now and then, such as the LP ‘Sitar Beat’.
