ACHTERGRONDINFORMATIE ** BACKGROUND

BETHEO IEESUS: BLUES FROM BRAZIL

“Born in São Paulo, Brazil. Son of Portuguese immigrants, he studied and graduated in architecture, but it was in music that he found his career – becoming a guitar-player, singer, songwriter and producer. Betho was one of the students of the great master of classical guitar, Henrique Pinto, and produced several artists such as Mariah Carey (Butterfly’s remix, 1997), Jimmy Cliff, Toquinho, Ivan Lins and many others. Being a literary author also, he wrote several poetry books and biographies of famous catholic figures. Despite those many abilities, it is in the music, esspecially in the blues, that his passion lies in, which was born from listening to great American idols from the 1930s to the 1970s, e.g. Robert Johnson, Son House, Willie Brown, Sonny Boy Willianson, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf and, though less intensely, Stevie Ray Vaughan, just to mention a few. In his lyrics, Betho brings a social content that exposes an unfair and violent Brazil, far from the soccer, carnival & beautiful women’s cliché. For instance, the music of “Blues do Nunca Mais” reminds us of the necessity to always fight the wrong and the evil and “Edu Blues” tells the story of a young man that was beaten over his bike theft while on his way to visit his girlfriend. Bold, this musician is a fearless critic of his country’s politics and poverty in the best spirit of the blues. Starting with the songs mentioned above, Betho is now recording his newest CD”.  Source:  Betho Ieesus. Check him out: http://www.numberonemusic.com/bethoieesus

THE DUKES OF HAMBURG: GERMANY’s NEWEST HTMAKERS

“The cover and the title of their latest album are, well… a cover of The Rolling Stones’ first US release ‘England’s Newest Hitmakers’.  And so is the music. ‘Pastiche’ fits better, but this pastiche sounds really convincing. This German band of mixed German-Californian origin plays pop and R&B the way the early “R&B combos” like The Yardbirds and The Stones used to do:  energetically, raw, without any compromise. And it sounds bloody good! Radio 68 plays several tracks from that album and adds music that inspired them” (Eddy Bonte) Thanks to The Dukes for the provided sounds!

“The DUKES OF HAMBURG are more than just a group – they are a way of life. “A way of life that has captured the imagination of the nation´s teenagers, and made them one of the most sought after groups in Beatdom. For the Dukes have their fingers on the pulse of the basic premise of “pop” music success – that its public buys sound, and the sound is what they give you with this their seventh album; a raw, exiting basic approach to Rhythm and Blues blended with their five own explosive characters. In the twenty years since the Dukes embarked on their pop career, they have not only chalked up major chart successes, but smashed attendance records on tours the length and breadth of the country. They have emerged as five well rounded intelligent talents, who will journey successfully far beyond the realms of pop music. And in this album there are fourteen good reasons why.*Andrew Loog Oldham”. (Source:  https://www.timeforaction.de/shop/the-dukes-of-hamburg/germanys-newest-hit-makers).

THE CREATION

“Sixties mod-psych band The Creation never made it big (though they were successful in Germany), but are no footnote either. Quite on the contrary: fondly remembered by their fan-base,  this  was a musically innovating group that brought pop art into practise on stage – easily equalling The Who. Guitarist Eddie Phillips was the first to play the guitar with a violin bow and to use feedback as a creative technique, not a gimmick. The Creation evolved from a band called The Mark Four, who released several singles between 1964 and 1966 and counted one John Dalton  (later to join The Kinks)  in their ranks. Eddie Phillips and Kenny Picket formed The Creation in 1966 and recruited Bob Garner on bass. Garner had played with Tony Sheridan and The Merseybeats. When Garner leaves the band, Kim Gardner of The Birds steps in. When co-founder Phillips leaves at the end of 1967, his place is taken by another Bird – Ronnie Wood. Regretfully, the story ends in 1968 when Ron Wood joins The Jeff Beck Group”.  (Eddy Bonte)
Edsel Records released a wonderful  box set with 3 cds and a dvd titled THE CREATION THEORY:  https://www.demonmusicgroup.co.uk/catalogue/releases/creation-theory/
Radio 68 plays The Mark Four, The Creation, The Birds and The Merseybeats.

RICHARD ‘Hershey’ SHIRMAN

This show is in honour of Richard Shirman. The Attack were a mod / /psychedelic  group formed in 1966 around singer Richard Shirman aka Hershey (26 April 1949 – 26 July 2017. The first line-up featured drummer Alan Whitehead (later in Marmalade), guitarist David O’List (later of The Nice) and John Du Cann (later of Andromeda and Atomic Rooster).  Their first single “Try It” was on the LP of the same title by American beat and R&B outfit The Standells and was also recorded by Ohio Express. The Attack also released a version of  ‘Hi Hi Silver Lining’ before Jeff Beck, but it was Jeff Beck  who  scored a hit.
Richard Shirman declined the offer to be the singer of  Andromeda, but Attack guitarist John Du Cann did join. DuCann was also in a band called Five Day Week Straw People whose only reason of existence was the offer to make a psychedelic album for budget label Saga.
In the early 80s, Richard ‘Hershey’ Shirman  put together a blues band called HERSHEY AND THE 12 BARS. Their first album carries the tongue-in-cheek title “Greatest Hits Vol. 2. “ (2000).  ABACABE Records later put out “Welcome to Hershey”, featuring live tracks from 1989 and studio tracks from 1986. Both albums feature a horn section with saxophonists Frank Mead and Nick Payne, friends of Hershey’s who have become quite famous and  have played with a number of big acts like Bill Wyman  and his Rhythm Kings. You will find more famous names in the line-ups, e.g. keyboardist Dave Lennox.
