“John “Hoppy” Hopkins, who has died aged 77 on 30 Jan. 2015, was one of the best-known counterculture figures of London in the 1960s, not just as a photographer and journalist, but as a political activist. He was the co-founder of at least three underground projects: International Times (IT) magazine; a fabled but short-lived music venue called the UFO Club; and the London Free school, a community-based adult education initiative.
