Art Rock Show – ID.Entity (Week 8)

Vijf jaar na het laatste studioalbum is Riverside eindelijk terug met een nieuwe plaat. Na het overlijden van gitarist Piotr Grudzinski in 2016, was dat absoluut geen vaststaande zaak. Maciej Meller, die op Wasteland al een gastrol had, is tot de band toegetreden en daarmee is de groep weer een kwartet.

Erik Groeneweg van Prog Wereld: “Ik ben onder de indruk van dit album, omdat het zo veel meer ‘open’ klinkt dan eigenlijk alle vorige albums. Over elke plaat hing wel een sluier van somberte, vaak vertaald in een brommend soort toetsenbehang. Daarmee werd de muziek wel reuze stemmig en melancholisch, maar dit frisse geluid bevalt me beter. De composities zijn helemaal top. Er zit geen zwakke broeder tussen en een aantal verrast behoorlijk. Opener Friend Or Foe doet me aan Simple Minds en zelfs A-Ha denken, zo toegankelijk is het.… Read more...

Om de release in de tijdsgeest te plaatsen: de legendarische rockband was in 1975 immens populair. Stadions liepen vol en de albums vlogen over de toonbank. De zesde full-length bereikte net als de andere platen de multiplatinumstatus. Toen de nieuwe release in de hitlijst belandde, kwamen ook alle andere vijf albums weer in de charts terug.

De rocksensatie besloot een dubbel-lp van Physical Graffiti te maken (net als andere artiesten rond die tijd) toen de acht songs, die in eerste instantie de tracklist vormden, de maximale speeltijd voor een plaat overschreden. … Read more...
