Art Rock Show – Welcome to the Planet (Week 8)

Een goed zes maanden na het uitkomen van het laatste album Common Ground, is er weer een nieuw studio album van Big Big Train (BBT), het veertiende. En de progressieve rockband van het VK heeft weer een pracht plaat afgeleverd.

The Afterword review: “Welcome To The Planet is the band’s 14th album in their 28 year recording history. It is the 9th since David Longdon and drummer Nick D’Virgilio joined, in 2009, and helped to turn the fortunes of the band on its head. Psychedelic, heavy, prog and more innovating sounds spanning the late 60s and the early 70s – Wednesday September 15th. Dan’s pick of the week: Popol Vuh (Hosianna Mantra), Ash Ra Tempel (Schwingungen), Faust (Faust IV), Harmonia (Deluxe), Can (Future Days) & La Düsseldorf (Viva).

Popol Vuh is een van de eerste Duitse Krautrock bands, die zich toelegde op elektronische- en wereldmuziek. In tegenstelling tot de vorige albums, verlaat de groep hier grotendeels de elektronische synthesizergeluiden en is het album opgebouwd rond akoestische instrumenten. Muzikaal slaat het album een brug tussen Westerse religieuze muziek en Oosterse meditatiemuziek, zoals de titel van het album ook suggereert.
