Art Rock Show – Zopp (Week 28)

Een van de grote ontdekkingen van dit jaar is het fantastische debuutalbum van Zopp, een Brits project van multi-instrumentalist Ryan Stevenson. De muziek van Zopp is diep geworteld in het mooiste van de Canterbury stijl van de progressieve rock. Je kan er Hatfield en the North and National Health in herkennen en ook natuurlijk een snuifje Soft Machine…

Jacco Stijkel van Prog Wereld: “Op dit debuut wordt Stevenson bijgestaan door Andy Tillison van The Tangent en drummer Andrea Moneta van Leviathan. De muziek is instrumentaal. In drie nummers is er sprake van de stem van Caroline Joy Clarke, maar verwacht geen echte zang. En verwacht ook geen nummers in het bekende songstramien. Juist door de vele invloeden die Stevenson in mijn muziek verwerkt, lukt het hem om de aandacht van de luisteraar goed vast te houden.

Art Rock Show – Rise Radiant (Week 27)

Dit keer hebben we de Australische progmetalformatie Caligula’s Horse te gast. De band laat met elk album een forse groei horen. Ralph Uffing van Prog Wereld: “De muziek is stevig en barst van de goed uitgevoerde tempowisselingen. Dat is natuurlijk niets bijzonders voor een progmetalband, maar het is de combinatie met de heerlijke melodieën die dit album ruim boven de middelmaat laat uitsteken. Hier zijn vijf klasbakken aan het werk, maar even op eerdere albums wordt de muziek vooral gedragen door de uitstekende sologitarist Sam Vallen en zanger Jim Grey. Vooral deze laatste stijgt hier boven zichzelf uit. Wat een zanger! (…)

Op dit album werkte de band samen met Jens Bogren die eerder werkte met bands als Opeth en Leprous. Het is duidelijk dat Bogren de nodige invloed heeft gehad op hoe dit album klinkt.… Read more...

Few New Yorkers knew that when they flipped their spare change to the spear-toting, horn-capped, wispy-bearded “Viking of Sixth Avenue” they were giving to a man who had transcended insurmountable conditions, acquired blindness and homelessness, to become one of the 20th century’s most gifted and under-recognized musicians.
