Art Rock Show – To Touch the Sky (Week 26)

The Prog Mind review: “I’m always impressed when a band can balance old and new, fresh and classic, ambience and rhythm.  The Emerald Dawn are very good at this.  (…)

On their last couple albums, the band proved to me that they can truly play on a towering level. Their music is typically poetic, mostly instrumental with sparse vocals, imaginative, and atmospheric. (…)

For “To Touch the Sky”, the band have changed yet again. This time, the music feels fleeting, existential, and floating. I still hear some influence from Mike Oldfield and Hackett, though I’m surprised at how little of the biggest classic “prog” bands I hear.… Read more...

Art Rock Show – One to Zero (Week 25)

Magnus Moar van The Progressive Aspect (TPA): “Six years is the longest wait fans have had between albums, but, given that Sylvan have a resume filled with magnificent recordings, one would expect the wait to have been worth it. Happily, One To Zero does not disappoint. The band’s previous two releases, Sceneries and Home, are amongst my all-time favourite albums, but it’s fair to say that they both require time and patience for the listener to fully appreciate all of the different layers and textures. One to Zero is a more immediate affair.… Read more...

Art Rock Show – G_d’s Pee AT STATE’S END! (Week 24)

G_d’s Pee AT STATE’S END! is het zevende album van de Canadese post-rockband Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

De albumtitel ‘G_d’s pee AT STATE’S END!’ lijkt alvast perfect gekozen.

Read more...

Art Rock Show – Harvest (Week 23)

The Spirit of Progressive Rock review: “The overall sound sees the band balancing acoustic instruments with electric ones, allowing the music a seeming simplicity whilst actually being somewhat more profound. (…)

A lot of the colour on the album though comes from the clever use of the instrumentation. Although the standard of musicianship is high, it is not on display to be dazzling but effective. The skills serve a purpose. It is the guitar work of Yorgos Mouhos and the interplay with the keyboards and wind instruments from Nicolas Nikolopoulos that initially catches the ear, with the other musicians giving the music emphasis when required.… Read more...
